Week 1 Start/Sit
The opener is in the books and it was AMAZING to have football back. Now buckle up and get ready for the full slate of Sunday/Monday games. For fantasy this is the heavy lifting portion of the week. In my opinion a championship roster in season long is built on 4 key areas. The draft, Waiver adds, Trades, and Start/Sit decisions. You'll need to succeed in at least 3/4. Probably the most frustrating part is deciding who to start and who to sit. I'll do my best to help in that department each week. If you ever have questions about specific roster decisions just contact me @chris_cianci on twitter I'd love to help.
I'm starting at RB and will give you some guys I like outside the top 24 in Fantasypros ECR (Remember ECR stands for Expert Consensus Rankings) and guys I don't like inside the top 24.
Running Backs
Start ✅
Tarik Cohen (ECR35) David Montgomery looks like he might play but I doubt the bears would give him 20-25 touches fresh off a groin injury. Cohen has RB2 upside in full PPR and Flex appeal in half
Phillip Lindsay (ECR36) Word out of Denver is Melvin Gordon is having trouble adjusting to the thin air and Lindsay looks great. Titans aren't exactly a plus matchup but I think Lindsay offers a decent floor flex option
Marlon Mack (ECR39) If you drafted Mack this is the week he needs to be in your lineup. As the veteran he should get the start and a decent amount of carries against a team in the Jags that aren't interested in being competitive. He's an RB2 for me this week.
Chris Thompson (ECR50) As the veteran passing down back on a team that should be playing from behind. Thompson offers flex value in half PPR and low end RB2 upside in full PPR
Zack Moss (ECR32) The rookie Moss has at minimum a split with Singletary but I think he gets the more valuable carries (Goalline and passing down). Buffalo should handily beat the Jets and run the ball down thier throats.
Boston Scott (ECR44) With Miles Sanders possibly limited Scott should see increased work. I can also see the Eagles going up a few scores on Washington and resting Sanders in the second half. ***Update Sanders is out. Fire up Scott as a mid range RB2***
Sit❌
Melvin Gordon (ECR20) Like I said in my starts with Lindsay. There's word out of Denver that Gordon is having trouble adjusting. I would not be comfortable with him in my lineup this week.
Leonard Fournette (ECR24) I like Fournette long term in the Tampa offense but he just joined the team and we have no idea what the split will be between him and RoJo.
Nick Chubb (ECR9) Now before you freak out he's NOT a full sit for me. He's more of a major downgrade. He's the early down back playing a defense in the Ravens that are extremely tough and on offense the Ravens control the clock. You probably drafted Chubb as your RB1 and need to start him but temper expectations.
Deandre Swift (ECR29) I know he's outside the top 24 but people did draft him as an RB2/3. I'm going to need time to start Swift confidently. He's nicked up and they signed Adrian Peterson. You can't start him right now.
Devin Singletary (ECR28) Again I'm outside the top 24 but I've gotten questions if he should start over other guys and the answer is no. Don't start Singletary. Just don't.
That's it for the RBs now let's get into WRs. For then the cutoff on ECR is 36
Wide Receivers
Start✅
Anthony Miller (ECR45) Miller came on strong last year and Detroit lost key pieces. Miller should have a strong season eating up single coverage opposite A-Rob. He should return solid WR2 value v Detroit. Even more so in PPR.
Dionte Johnson (ECR37) Right on the cutoff for ECR but for me he's an easy start. The Giants swiss cheese secondary should help too.
Jamison Crowder (ECR38) Buffalo looks like a tough matchup but if they have a weakness it's at the slot and well well well look who plays in the slot and is already a target hog in this offense. In full PPR he's an extremely high floor play.
Jerry Jeudy (ECR49) I've been on Jeudy from the get go but now with Sutton banged up he should be thrust into a heavily targeted role immediately.
Desean Jackson (ECR51) The whole Eagles WR core is nicked up or out and Desean Jackson has a great matchup against Football Team. If you drafted him it was for the very reason to start him here and trade him so it's not even a question
Scotty Miller (ECR107) If you need a nice floor WR3 in deep PPR leagues I like Miller. He should see plenty of targets with Evans reported to be doubtful and Lattimore on Godwin.
Sit❌
Davante Parker (ECR26) He's banged up and has a terrible matchup. I actually prefer Preston Williams but I'm fading both @ New England
Mike Evans (ECR10) He's injured so obviously if he's out you can't start him but if he plays he's still a sit for me.
Amari Cooper (ECR16) not only is he dealing with an injury but if he does play he'll see Ramsey. Leave him on your bench if you drafted him. (Which you never should have)
Jarvis Landry (ECR31) It's not exactly a terrible matchup but he's still coming back from the off-season hip surgery and is in a low volume passing attack now. Also, news came out of camp recently that his usage is game script dependent.
Tight ends are next and the cutoff will be ECR 12
The starts will look familiar from my streaming blog.
Tight Ends
Start✅
Jonnu Smith (ECR15) Jonnu will be in my start section until people catch up and realize he's a start every week. Matchup is decent but it's not a matchup based decision for me.
Blake Jarwin (ECR16) The vacant targets are there and the role is his. Now he just needs to put it together. So many vacated targets in this offense up for grabs.
T.J. Hockenson (ECR18) I'm not particularly high on Hock but with Golladay banged up he should see the targets.
Eric Ebron (ECR20) Huge TD upside and a fantastic matchup. I love Ebron this week.
Sit❌
Rob Gronkowski (ECR11) He's a perfect example of value in name only. He hasn't played in a loooooong time and I don't even think his snap share will be all that high in his first he back. Starting him you're basically betting on him to score a TD.
Jared Cook (ECR10) Same game other side of the ball. He lived on deep targets last year and I can't rely on that as my TE. Matchup is ok I just don't have faith in his role on this offense.
Evan Engram (ECR9) This is a tough call if you have him you kinda have to start him but the matchup is brutal. Volume should be there but I don't see him producing much. Maybe in garbage time. 🗑️
Last but not least the signal callers. I believe QBs are the most matchup susceptible. That's part of what goes into my streaming based approach.
Quarterbacks
Start✅
Aaron Rodgers (ECR15) Rodgers has something to prove this year and I love this matchup. Mainly Davante Adam's matchup. The 2 should link up all game.
Mitch Trubiski (ECR25) After I wrote my stream blog I looked into more numbers and Mitch has killed the Lions in his career. You probably have better options but if you're in deeper or superflex he's a fantastic play.
Tyrod Taylor (ECR18) My #1 high floor stream of the week. He's surrounded by the best weapons he's ever had and should use his legs to squeeze into the top 10-12
Jimmy G (ECR 16) I honestly didn't want to put Jimmy on here (not as much as I didn't want to attempt to spell his last name) but the numbers dictate he should be here. He had his best games against Arizona and the best way to attack them is through the air.
Gardner Minshew (ECR19) It will probably be hideous to watch but my new nickname for Minshew is the garbage man. He should see negative game script all year and score all his points when the game doesn't matter. Only problem I see is Indy controlling the clock in the second half with thier new RB.
Sit❌
Tom Brady (ECR13) It's outside the top 12 but Tom and Gronk are probably the biggest mistakes and the most overdrafted players I see this year. He's a low ceiling option facing a really good NO defense.
Kyler Murray (ECR11) This is just a terrible matchup. They had success using drake against SF last season and I think they stick to what worked
Daniel Jones (ECR27) Well outside the top 12 but I'm seeing him started in a ton of home leagues. The matchup is god awful. Even in 2qb or really deep leagues I wan nothing to do with Danny Dimes this week.
That's it for my first Start/Sit blog!! Hope you enjoyed it and let me know what you think. Follow me on twitter for gameday updates and quick lineup decisions @Chris_Cianci
